This soapstone fantasy sculpture is Pillar the Hookah Smoking Caterpillar.
Most people have heard of the hookah smoking caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland. Well, this is his cousin. Pillar learned the art of smoking from his cousin and enjoys the peace it brings to his busy world. He takes time out from busily munch plants and evading birds (who consider him a tasty morsel) to smoke a bit of his favorite weed. Sitting atop his mushroom with his mouthpiece in hand, Caterpillar sleepily nods as he contemplates the world around him.
This sculpture is meticulously carved of one solid piece of soapstone. The mushroom has fluting on the underside of its cap and seems to grow naturally from the base. Pillar is close to going into his cocoon for his metamorphosis into a butterfly. His arms reflect this, resembling wings with an iridescent, metallic look to them and nearly hide the short legs along the front of his segmented body. His face, shadowed by his soft head, has a drowsy look to it.
Tan soapstone with inclusions similar to strands of rusty iron; copper wire connecting the hookah and the hookah handpiece
