Critters included in this category are based on someone else’s design and/or carved from a roughout. The roughout may be a simple band saw/block-like roughout or something a bit more intricate. In all cases, the critter involved was researched for the correct number of toes to the color of their fur or feathers and carved in detail.
Roughouts are a great way for a carver to have a bit of fun and tend to involve relatively common animals, birds, fish or mythological creatures in very common poses. The quality of the final carving is all in the hands of the carver or, if carved in a class, the carver and the instructor — who is generally the original designer.
Each piece still has its own little story to tell. Be sure to click on the additional pictures, where that story is told and come back often to see who’s new in the neighborhood.
