Spoons may be as simple as the wooden spoon you use to stir your pot of soup or chili, but they may also be as complicated as intricate celtic knots or as delicate as lace.
Some of the spoons presented here are on the simpler side and some are very far from simple. All are treated with food safe oils, except the ones with color to them, but I wouldn’t recommend using the more delicate, intricate or pieced ones for any cooking! They are definitely not dishwasher safe.
These pieces don’t come with individual stories; however, the more intricate ones are traditionally referred to as love spoons. Among the theories presented concerning love spoons are that suitors would bring a spoon to carve when they were courting their young ladies and the ladies’ fathers would check the progress on the spoon, when the young man left, to make sure his hands were busy with it and not his daughter. Another is that the spoons were used to show the young man’s skill in working with his hands — an indication that he’d be able to make things and provide for his lady love, as well as make a thing of beauty to bring her pleasure.
